7-Levels of Consciousness

7-Levels of Consciousness

There is not one universally accepted model for the “7 levels of consciousness,” but a prominent framework by Richard Barrett uses seven stages from Survival and Relationships to Self-Esteem, Transformation, Self-Expression, Connection, and finally Service.

Alternatively, some spiritual traditions, like Vedanta, outline seven states of consciousness including the Waking State, Dreaming State, Deep Sleep State, Transcendental Consciousness, Cosmic Consciousness, Unity Consciousness, and Pure Consciousness.

Barrett’s 7 Levels of Consciousness

Richard Barrett’s model focuses on personal and organizational development.

    1. Survival: Focus on basic needs and security.
    2. Relationships: Focus on connection and belonging with others.
    3. Self-Esteem: Focus on personal value and achieving goals.
    4. Transformation: Recognizing that one is more than the ego and exploring deeper motivations.
    5. Self-Expression: Identifying with one’s natural gifts and talents.
  • Connection: Awareness of being energetically connected to all people.
  • Service: Living a soul-infused life, embracing opportunities, and acting with compassion.

Vedantic States of Consciousness

This model from Vedanta describes levels of experience and awareness.

  • Waking State: Our ordinary state of experience, aware of the external world.
  • Dreaming State: A subjective experience of internal realities while asleep.
  • Deep Sleep State: A baseline state of consciousness, where one is not experiencing external or internal stimuli.
  • Cosmic Consciousness: Experiencing the presence of the observer within all objects of perception.
  • Unity Consciousness: Realizing that the self and all other beings are part of a single, unified field.
  • Pure Consciousness: The ultimate state where the distinction between the knower and the known dissolves entirely.
